Neutral rugs are easy to build a room around and can have real staying power - it’ll be easier to change out furniture and decor around it over time. Save that for low traffic spaces like bedrooms.ĭecide whether you want your rug to be the star of the show or play a supporting role. Cotton feels nice underfoot, but isn’t as durable. Wool, natural fibers like jute, and polypropylene are hard-working materials that tend to wear well. Take a look at what the material is of the rug to make sure it’s the right fit for the room and your lifestyle. In dining rooms, be sure that when you pull your chairs out that all four legs stay on the rug. In bedrooms, a significant portion of the rug should be under the bed (go for about 2/3rds) or use runners down each side. In living rooms, my preference is for the main pieces of furniture (like sofas and chairs) all have at least the front feet sitting on the rug.
